Detectives with the Madera County Sheriff’s Office arrested a local man Tuesday in connection with sexual assaults in Maryland and California.

Mauricio Martinez-Garcia, 27, was taken into custody at his Madera residence without incident, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. He faces charges of rape and is scheduled to be extradited to Maryland to face allegations there, authorities said.

The arrest followed a request from the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland for assistance in apprehending a suspect wanted for a sexual assault.

Madera County detectives later connected Martinez-Garcia to a second assault that occurred in Los Banos. Search and arrest warrants were issued by the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.
