A Fresno police officer was shot at by a convicted felon during a struggle in an alley Sunday evening, leading to an officer-involved shooting that left the suspect hospitalized, authorities said.

Around 6:45 p.m., an officer contacted a suspicious man near Clinton and West avenues, the Fresno Police Department said. During the encounter, the man, later identified as 41-year-old Bradley Nicholson, fought with the officer, pulled out a gun and fired once. The round struck the officer’s department-issued baseball cap but did not injure him.

Two officers returned fire, hitting Nicholson once in the upper body. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where police said he is in critical but stable condition.

Nicholson, who is on Post Release Community Supervision for burglary, also had a felony warrant issued in September. He remains in custody at the hospital and will be booked into the Fresno County Jail after his release on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer and multiple firearm charges.

This marks the sixth officer-involved shooting involving Fresno police in 2025.
