The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office identified the man who died Monday while working on an oil rig as Alfredo Oronia, 29, of Arvin.

Around 10:45 a.m., deputies and emergency personnel responded to a 911 call reporting an injured man in a field near Mt. Whitney and Polk avenues in Riverdale. Oronia was pronounced dead at the scene from major injuries sustained during the incident.

Preliminary investigations indicate Oronia was part of a crew removing an oil rig when a large piece of steel swung down and struck him.

The Division of Occupational Safety and Health has been contacted to investigate the workplace accident.
