A genocide scholar argues that claims the Gaza war has ended are misleading, saying Israeli military actions and official rhetoric show violence against Palestinians continues despite an October ceasefire imposed by the Trump administration.
In a commentary published Friday in The Guardian, Holocaust and genocide studies professor Raz Segal describes Gaza as the site of an “ongoing Nakba,” citing Israeli officials who have framed the campaign as a broader effort to defend “western civilization.”
Segal points to statements by Israeli lawmakers and ministers portraying Palestinians as existential enemies and justifying large-scale destruction.
He notes that international bodies, including the International Court of Justice, have warned of a plausible risk of genocide, while some Israeli leaders have openly called for the population of Gaza to be “wiped out.”
Segal argues the violence is rooted in long-standing structures of nationalism and settler colonialism and that global protests reflect growing public rejection of the war.
