What began as a routine traffic stop for failing to obey a posted stop sign turned into a more serious enforcement action, CHP said on Monday.

During a graveyard shift patrol, officers contacted a driver who not only failed to stop but was found to have cannabis in the vehicle. The driver, under 21, was also in possession of a firearm with its serial number removed. Authorities arrested the driver and recovered the weapon.

The California Highway Patrol emphasized that routine stops, even for minor infractions, can uncover impaired driving, illegal weapons, and other risks to public safety.

Officers on graveyard shifts continue to play a critical role in keeping Central Valley roadways safe, CHP said.
