The Fresno Police Department has been awarded a $635,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety aimed at efforts to reduce serious injuries and deaths on local roads.

The grant, which was announced Tuesday, will support enforcement and education efforts through September 2026.

Under the grant, the department plans to conduct DUI checkpoints and patrols, high-visibility distracted driving operations, and enforcement targeting dangerous driver behaviors such as speeding, failure to yield, running stop signs or red lights, and improper lane changes.

Programs will also focus on bicycle and pedestrian safety, motorcycle enforcement, street racing, and sideshows.

More Training for Officers

The funding will allow for officer training in Standard Field Sobriety Tests, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, and Drug Recognition Expert certification. The department will also conduct DUI warrant operations, community traffic safety presentations, and collaborative outreach with local residents.

“Through focused traffic enforcement and education, we’re working toward a future where everyone will be safe on California roads,” said OTS Director Stephanie Dougherty. “By encouraging people to prioritize safety in their daily choices, we are creating a strong road safety culture together.”

The grant is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
