A Strathmore man was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for crimes against children, the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement on Monday.
Derli Ramirez, 26, pleaded no contest to charges in two separate cases.
In one case, Ramirez was stopped by California Highway Patrol officers on Dec. 25, 2020, for erratic driving on northbound Highway 65 while transporting three juveniles, including a 9-year-old and an 8-month-old infant who was not properly secured.
Ramirez later pleaded no contest to three counts of felony child abuse, one count of misdemeanor DUI, and one count of driving without a valid license, prosecutors said.
While awaiting sentencing on that case, Ramirez committed sexual assault against an 11-year-old girl on April 1, 2023. He later pleaded no contest to one count of forcible lewd act on a child under 14 and one count of assault with intent to commit a lewd act on a child under 14, the statement said.
Under California law, Ramirez must serve at least 16 years and four months before being eligible for parole and will be required to register as a sex offender for life, the DA’s office said.
