Kaweah Health in Visalia has promoted from within its ranks for a new CEO.
The board of directors for the district hospital announced Monday that Marc Mertz, formerly the hospital’s chief strategy officer, will replace longtime chief executive officer Gary Herbst.
The hospital cited Mertz’s background in mergers and acquisitions, physician services growth, and system wide strategy as reasons for his selection.
“We are excited for Marc to step into the position of CEO, bringing not only more than 20 years of experience outside our organization, but also a deep knowledge and understanding of Kaweah Health and our unique challenges,” said Kaweah Health Board President Mike Olmos in a statement.
“Marc is the right person to guide Kaweah Health through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
Mertz Focused on Physician/Hospital Strategies
Mertz has 30 years of experience in health care, focusing on consulting and hospital-physician alignment, according to his LinkedIn. Before joining with Kaweah in 2018, he served as vice president and physician services practice leader at GE Healthcare in El Segundo.
While at Kaweah, he built partnerships between the hospital and the Cleveland Clinic and Valley Children’s Hospital, expanding resources at the hospital.
He also served as liaison between the hospital and national, state, and local officials. He oversaw community engagement groups and the patient experience team.
“I’m honored to have the confidence of the Board to serve Kaweah Health as its new CEO,” Mertz said. “During my time here, I have witnessed firsthand the fantastic care we provide to our patients. I am proud of our legacy and accomplishments, and I look forward to working with our employees and our medical staff to reach new levels of high-quality, compassionate care for our community.”
Herbst, who had been with the hospital in various roles for 34 years, announced his retirement in June.
