Rogelio Barrera, 34, was denied parole for three years in connection with the 2015 stabbing death of his roommate Wednesday, the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Barrera, who is serving a 16-years-to-life sentence at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, fatally stabbed his roommate 12 times on June 27, 2015, during an argument at their Cutler residence.

Authorities said Barrera was under the influence of methamphetamine and alcohol at the time. Another person at the residence called law enforcement, and Barrera was arrested at the scene.

A Tulare County jury convicted him of second-degree murder with the use of a knife on Aug. 4, 2017.

This was his first parole hearing. Commissioners cited prior inmate battery and a high risk of future violence in denying parole.
