Two people, including a 14-year-old girl, were killed and another person was seriously injured in a solo vehicle crash late Tuesday on Belmont Avenue west of Brawley Avenue, authorities said.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as sisters Angelina Nino, 21, and Rayla Piedra, 14, both of Fresno. Piedra was a student at Justin Garza High School, authorities said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded around 11:05 p.m. and found a vehicle that had been traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed before leaving the roadway.

The driver failed to stop at a stop sign, struck a power pole, several trees, fencing, and a parked vehicle before coming to rest in a trucking yard.

Nino, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. Piedra, a passenger, later died at a local hospital. A 27-year-old man who was also in the vehicle remains hospitalized with major injuries, CHP originally reported.

Investigators said the driver and front passenger were wearing seat belts, but the rear passenger was not. Alcohol and drug use remain under investigation.
