Fresno Unified is hosting its annual School Choice Expo where students and families can learn about magnet and specialty school options offered in the district.

Next Tuesday’s expo is a one-stop shop showcasing dual immersion programs, career pathways, and student initiatives.

“Basically, think of it as kind of like a big college fair, but for all of our schools in person,” said Daniel Rodriguez, manager of the district’s Department of Culture and Student Inclusion. “It’s more self-paced as you go. Parents will get to visit the booths in person. … They can just take their time and meet with representatives, ask questions.”

Representatives from each site, including principals, teachers and students, will be available to talk and give personal insight about programs.

Highlighted programs include engineering, entrepreneurship, visual and performing arts, global studies, and International Baccalaureate.

“With more than 20 magnet and specialty programs in our district and more than 25 career pathways at our high schools, we invite families to explore which options best match their student’s interests and passions,” said Superintendent Misty Her.

The expo provides an opportunity for students and families to explore education options in the district that students can enroll in during the next academic year.

Transfers Office staffers will be on hand, ready to assist with transfer applications that are due Dec. 1. Staffers will be available to speak in English, Spanish, and Hmong.

Attendees will have a chance to discover programs fit for their child, engaging their interests and passions.

“This is one of Fresno’s best-kept secrets. And our thing is really connecting and exposing our families and parents to all the many different types of programs,” Rodriguez said. “It’s so important to connect with the staff and learn about the programs firsthand.”

The event is open to all age groups with programs ranging from early learning for children ages 0-5 to early college options.

School Choice Expo Event Details

Fresno Unified will hold the School Choice Expo from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21 in the Duncan Polytechnical High School gymnasium.

If you can’t make the in-person event, a virtual School Choice Expo will be available through Dec. 1.

Families can register for the self-paced virtual event here. After registering, a link leading to a virtual exhibit hall will be emailed to registrants.

The exhibit hall includes booths for each site, including informational videos and graphs that families can explore. Also, school counselors and site administration can be contacted to answer any questions.
