Fresno State has a bye week, and so does its next opponent, San Diego State.

The Bulldogs are on a media blackout this week, so it’s unknown if there are any plans to make changes at quarterback.

As resilient as E.J. Warner is, he still has thrown nine interceptions and fumbled the ball away three times. The nine pickoffs are tied for the most in the nation.

Could backup Carson Conklin be the answer?

The Mountain West game of the week is UNLV at Boise State (12:30 p.m., FS1). The winner will have the inside track to finish first and host the conference championship game Dec. 5.

Fresno State quarterback E.J. Warner — seen here Aug. 30 at home against Georgia Southern— has thrown nine interceptions this season and is tied for the most in the nation as the Bulldogs enter their bye week. (Fresno State)

Entz on Bear Bryant Watch List

Head coach Matt Entz is a finalist for the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award.

Entz is 5-2 in his first season with Fresno State. He previously won two FCS national championships at North Dakota State.

The American Heart Association named 28 coaches to the watch list. The winner will be announced Jan. 21 at a ceremony in Houston.

Clovis QB Commits to Bulldogs

Clovis High School quarterback Deagan Rose announced on X that he is flipping his commitment from Oregon State to Fresno State.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported me through this process! Special thanks to the Fresno State staff and my family!” Rose wrote on X.

Mac Olsen, a defensive end from Manti High School in Utah, also announced his commitment to Fresno State.

San Diego State Kickoff Time Almost Set

Fresno State and San Diego State on Oct. 25 will kick off at either 12:30 or 4 p.m. Pacific time, the conference announced. The exact time will be set after this week’s games.

Either way, the game will be televised on FS1.

The Bulldogs had two 4 p.m. home games last year (Washington State and San Jose State). The last time the Bulldogs had an earlier game was an 11 a.m. kickoff “Brunch with the Bulldogs” game to open the 2021 season against UConn.

Secret Poll Used by Conference for Tiebreaker

The Mountain West lacks in transparency with its tiebreaking procedure, if it comes down to computer polls.

The first two criteria are head-to-head results, followed by ranking in the College Football Playoff poll. If those do not break a tie, the conference uses a composite of four computer polls. Three of those polls are public — ESPN SP+, ESPN Strength of Record (SOR), and KPI.

Only the SportsSource poll remains secret. The MWC told GV Wire it cannot share the data because the poll is “proprietary.” Only subscribers have access to something that could determine whether a team plays for the conference championship or heads to the New Mexico Bowl.

The media and public must take the conference at its word if the tiebreaker comes down to the secret poll.

Oregon State Fires Coach

Fresno State’s 36-27 victory at Oregon State on Sept. 6 looks less impressive by the week.

The 0-7 Beavers fired head coach Trent Bray this week. Robb Akey, a special assistant and interim special teams coordinator, will serve as interim head coach.

The Oregonian called this season “an unmitigated disaster, with blowouts piling up against stronger teams and winnable games slipping away thanks to poor play.”

Oregon State and Washington State will be the heritage programs as the Pac-12 Conference reforms next year.
