The California DMV has unveiled new driver’s license and ID card designs, which include updated security features.
State officials began issuing the redesigned cards on Wednesday, Oct. 1, the DMV announced.
They include background images depicting “the unique beauty of the state’s landscape,” the agency said in a written statement.
But the change isn’t merely aesthetic, as the redesign also adds new high-tech security features.
“The new cards use next generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California’s iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline,” Gordon said.
What New Security Features Are Included in New California Driver Licenses and ID Cards?
The newly added nature scenes on the cards also help prevent counterfeiting, officials said.
The updated cards will also add a new “digital security signature” to one of the two barcodes printed on their reverse sides, according to the DMV.
“California will be one of the first states to add this kind of digital signature,” the DMV statement said.
Moving forward, driver’s licenses and ID cards will no longer include a magnetic strip on the back.
Why Are California Driver’s Licenses and ID Cards Being Changed?
The DMV periodically updates driver licenses and ID cards, primarily to improve security and keep up with rapidly developing technology.
California cards were last updated to include new security features in 2010, officials said.
They again got a new look in 2018 with the adoption of REAL ID in California.
Will Old California Driver’s Licenses and ID Cards Remain Valid?
Licenses and IDs featuring the previous design will remain valid through their scheduled expiration dates, DMV officials said.
“While I know some of our customers will want the new version of the driver’s license, there is no need to replace an existing license or identification card until your current one expires<” Gordon said.
How Much Do New California Driver’s Licenses and ID Cards Cost?
The fee for new driver’s licenses will remain at $45. The cost for ID cards is $39, although low-cost and no-cost options exist for those who qualify.
DMV officials reminded the public that many services can be carried out online on the agency’s website at dmv.ca.gov.
