The San Francisco 49ers had started their 2025 campaign off with a 3-0 record, defeating the Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals. However, in Week 4, they took on the Jacksonville Jaguars and were handed their first loss, as they fell 26-21.
San Francisco got starting quarterback Brock Purdy back for Sunday’s interconference matchup, but the former seventh-round pick threw two interceptions and lost a fumble on their final possession, contributing to the result.
Through four weeks, NFL analysts like USA Today’s Nate Davis weren’t sold on the 49ers, as he had Kyle Shanahan’s team at No. 13 in his power rankings. Now, after the loss, Davis has dropped the team down to No. 15.
“Among this team’s mounting issues is its heavy (and worrisome?) reliance on RB Christian McCaffrey, who leads the league with 100 touches but is averaging what would be a career-low 5.3 per (discounting his abbreviated campaigns),” Davis wrote.
The teams ahead of San Francisco are the Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 14), Washington Commanders (No. 13), Denver Broncos (No. 12), Indianapolis Colts (No. 11), Pittsburgh Steelers (No. 10), Seattle Seahawks (No. 9), Kansas City Chiefs (No. 8), Los Angeles Chargers (No. 7), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 6), Detroit Lions (No. 5), Green Bay Packers (No. 4), Los Angeles Rams (No. 3), Buffalo Bills (No. 2) and Philadelphia Eagles (No. 1).
Denver, Jacksonville and Pittsburgh are the three teams that jumped the 49ers in the last week, but if Shanahan’s team can take down Sean McVay’s 3-1 Rams on Thursday, they should move up a few spots.
