The team returns to the field Oct. 4 at home against Nevada — which is also on a bye this week.
Fresno State primarily uses the shotgun formation under Entz and offensive coordinator Josh Davis. In five games this season, Bulldog quarterbacks have lined up 94% in the shotgun and its pistol variation.
“The under-center game is few and far between right now for us. It all depends on what we think of our opponent. Are they penetrating with their D-line or are they flowing with their D-line, just in terms of like a zone scheme? So we try to analyze that, and it’s an imperfect system, but we’re trying to find advantages any way we can,” Davis said.
Davis said the under-center formation gives running backs a better opportunity to find a hole. The offense compensates in the shotgun by running the pistol variation, with the running back lined up behind the quarterback.
Former Nevada head coach Chris Ault helped popularize the offense in college football in the late 2000s with Colin Kaepernick as the quarterback.
“That allows our backs to press aiming points and maximize the scheme that we’re running,” Davis said.
Jacob Spomer, playing his first year at center after moving from left guard, prefers the longer snap to the QB.
“My whole life I’ve done it. If anything under center, it’s been new to me. Every day before and after practice, we’re just working on it, trying to perfect it,” Spomer said.

Bulldogs to Honor Tedford
The program announced former coach Jeff Tedford will be inducted into the Fresno State Football Ring of Honor on Oct. 25 during halftime against San Diego State.

Tedford coached two stints for the Bulldogs, 2017 to 2019, stepping away for health reasons before returning 2022 to 2023. He won two Mountain West championships, the Las Vegas Bowl and LA Bowl. He finished with a 45-22 record.
He was also a record-breaking quarterback for the Bulldogs in the early 1980s.
Tedford becomes the third head coach (behind Jim Sweeney and Pat Hill) and 13th overall member of the Ring of Honor.
Bracha Semifinalist for Award

Safety Camryn Bracha is a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded to the top scholar-athlete in college football.
Bracha has a 3.68 grade-point average, and won several Mountain West and university academic honors.
On the field, Bracha is a team captain, ranks third with 22 tackles, with one interception.
The award is presented by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Bracha is one of 177 semifinalists.
Mankins, Neal Nominated for Pro Football Hall of Fame
Two former Bulldogs are among the 128 modern-era nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame — offensive lineman Logan Mankins and running back Lorenzo Neal.
Neal was considered one of the best blocking backs in the NFL during his 16-year career with seven teams. He participated in the legendary “Music City Miracle” play during the 2000 playoffs with Tennessee. He was named to four Pro Bowl teams.
Mankins, a 2005 first-round draft choice for New England, appeared in two Super Bowl games with the Patriots. He played 11 seasons, earning two first-team All-Pro and seven Pro Bowl honors.
The Hall of Fame list will be whittled down to 50 in October, 25 semifinalist in the fall, and then 15 finalists. The inductees are named during Super Bowl week in February.
Mankins and Neal have been nominated for the Hall of Fame before.
