A Bay Area man is accused of stabbing a 71-year-old man to death due to a vendetta against sex offenders.
Varun Suresh, 29, of Fremont, was charged with murder and burglary in Alameda County Superior Court on Monday, Sept. 22, according to Fremont Police Department officials and county booking records.
The fatal stabbing was first reported shortly before noon on Sept. 18 at a home in the 600 block of Upper Vinters Circle in Fremont, police said.
A 911 caller reported that two men had been involved in a fight, and that one of them was “gravely injured,” according to a Fremont PD statement.
Officers arrived within minutes to discover the 71-year-old victim lying wounded on the ground with stab wounds, officials said. Despite rescue efforts, the man died from his injuries at the scene.
The victim’s name was not yet released.
‘He sought out registered sex offenders as potential victims’
Varun Suresh, 29, of Fremont, was detained in front of the home and ultimately arrested in connection with the killing, according to police and jail records. A knife was seized as evidence.
“Evidence at the scene indicated a violent struggle,” the police statement said. “Further investigation revealed that Suresh specifically targeted the victim because of the victim’s age and previous offenses.”
“Suresh admitted that he sought out registered sex offenders as potential victims,” the statement said.
Police said investigators determined the victim had fled to a neighboring home during the attack, but the suspect chased after him and continued the assault.
Suresh was being held without bail pending an arraignment hearing scheduled for Oct. 14, records show.
The deadly stabbing was the fifth homicide reported in Fremont this year.
