A Los Angeles city councilmember dissed Fresno at a recent news conference, unable to reconcile that Fresno got Shakira over Los Angeles — even though that was untrue. At least Shakira’s hips did not lie.
Fresno County Supervisor Luis Chavez had to set things straight with LA councilmember Ysabel Jurado.
The Columbian superstar brought her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran world tour to Valley Children’s Stadium on Aug. 7.
“We can’t keep losing out to Fresno. Shakira ended her world tour in Fresno, OK?” Jurado said to the guffaws of the crowd standing behind her at a recent news conference. “We cannot rely on our name alone. You know what we need to do? We need to invest in ourselves.”
Chavez was having none of it, firing back on Instagram.
“Councilmember, as the county supervisor of Fresno, there’s no need to degrade or make fun of other cities that literally feed Angelenos by picking the fruits and vegetables sold at the DTLA markets daily,” Chavez posted. “We were proud to host Shakira’s sold-out concert and it was here for a reason. Please focus on cleaning up your district and working with your team to bring entertainment bookings, instead of attempting to make fun of a city that is the breadbasket of the world. Think about that next time you eat your salad or vegan hot dogs.”
Jurado was inaccurate on several fronts. Shakira’s world tour continues in Mexico, New York City, and South America. And, before hitting Fresno, Shakira played two shows — Aug. 4 and 5 — at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
“Councilmember Jurado’s broader point is about wanting Los Angeles to be a top destination for world-class events, which she believes is critical for our city’s economic recovery. Beyond that, we won’t be providing additional comment,” her office said in response.
FPPC Gets New Vice Chair

A former Republican legislator is joining the Fair Political Practices Commission as the new vice chair.
Charlene Zettel, a former assemblymember representing San Diego County from 1998 to 2002, officially joined the FPPC — the independent state agency in charge of enforcing campaign finance law.
“I look forward to working alongside my colleagues, across party lines, to strengthen transparency, accountability and trust in California’s government,” Zettel said in a statement.
Zettel replaces another former GOP assemblymember, Catharine Baker.
Appointed by state Controller Malia Cohen, Zettel’s term runs through January 2029.
