A bicyclist was killed early Friday morning in a hit-and-run crash west of Winton, authorities said.

The Merced Communication Center notified California Highway Patrol Merced Area Units at 6:22 a.m. of an unresponsive adult male on Santa Fe Drive west of Shaffer Road.

Emergency personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate the bicyclist, believed to be between 40 and 50 years old, was riding westbound in the eastbound lane when an unknown vehicle traveling eastbound struck the front wheel of his bicycle.

The impact ejected the bicyclist onto the south shoulder of the road. The driver did not stop and continued east toward Shaffer Road, authorities said.

It is unclear whether alcohol or drugs were factors.
