California Highway Patrol officers reported a significant decline in fatal crashes over the Labor Day weekend, citing a nearly 50% drop compared to the same period last year.
From Friday to Monday, CHP officers made 45,829 enforcement contacts across the state, issuing 34,331 citations, including 19,798 for speeding.
DUI arrests rose slightly to 1,214, up from 1,140 in 2024.
Despite the increase in enforcement activity, fatal crashes fell from 39 in 2024 to 20 this year, and fatalities dropped from 43 to 21, the CHP said.
Officials emphasized that each stop, ticket, and arrest represents a dangerous behavior removed from California roads.
The CHP reminded drivers to slow down, stay focused, buckle up, and never drive under the influence.
