Clovis police will deploy extra officers Saturday evening during Labor Day weekend to look for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The department said the saturation patrols are meant to prevent crashes and remind residents to plan ahead before celebrating.

Police urged drivers to designate a sober driver, use ride-hailing services or public transportation, and stop friends or family members from driving impaired.

They also advised the public to call 911 or the department’s non-emergency line at (559) 324-2800 to report suspected impaired drivers.

Officers noted impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and cannabis products can also affect driving ability.

The enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
