The Fresno Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location.
Police said checkpoint locations are chosen based on data showing impaired driving-related crashes.
The operation’s goal is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
The department reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol.
Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can also affect driving, and it is illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana.
First-time DUI charges carry an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, officials said.
Funding for the checkpoint comes from a California Office of Traffic Safety grant, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
