Community Shares Messages of Support

Through the form above, community members have shared their heartfelt support. Below are some of their messages, which will continue to be updated:

Timothy and Karen White, Chancellor Emeritus: Dear Joe and Mary. We just learned a few days ago that Joe is not well. We send our love, support, understanding and best wishes. You are in our hearts and prayers. Thank you for your bold leadership and relentless commitment to serve, in every way you could, those who have been under-served. Joe I’ve known since our UC days, and more closely during our shared time at the California Sate University. Your leadership was principled, impactful, inspiring and deeply appreciated.

Saul Jimenez-Sandoval and Mariana Anagnostopoulos: Mariana, sons, and I send Joe and Mary, and their family, our prayers and best wishes.

Amie Douglass: Sending love and strength to the Castro family. Thank you for everything you have done for Fresno State University and the CSU system.

Matt and Mali Flood: Sending our prayers your way! The Valley has been blessed because of your contributions to higher Education and community. May God continue to strengthen your family. We are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers!

Dr. Abraham Ruelas: We continue to pray for Joe and the rest of the family. I had the privilege of working with Joe at Casa Joaquin Murietta at Cal. He was such an inspirational leader and came up with great programmatic ideas like fireside chats with Cal professors at the house after Monday dinner. Joe played a significant part in making Casa a model for all residential programs at Cal. Always humble and caring, Joe has always exemplified what it means to be a servant-leader. Our prayers continue.

Carmen Chapman: Thank you, former President Castro, for helping us get lactation stations on campus.  We couldn’t have done it without you.  I appreciate your willingness to help advocate for important issues.

Lori White: Joe and I go back to Sacramento, classmates at Stanford and longtime colleagues in higher education. I love him dearly like everyone who knows him. Sending love and prayers to Joe and his family.

Adela Jones: I am sorry to hear about Dr. Castro and am praying for peace. I knew Dr. Castro when I was the Superintendent for Sanger Unified. He was an advocate for the valley students and opened the doors to students who otherwise couldn’t go to college. We partnered with Fresno State on The Sanger Promise and Dr. Castro was ready to do what he could. I also will remember the quarterly meetings he had with Superintendents and educational leaders in the valley to keep up informed, as well as to hear from us what was needed from Fresno State to ensure our schools were staffed and prepared to serve the children of the valley. He’s a great man! Please tell him hello from Adela and that I am praying for comfort and peace. Thank you.

Tyler Miller: I met Dr. Castro at Fresno State. He was an inspirational leader who I admired and cared deeply about. I am so sorry for his health. Sending positive energy to the family and Dr Castro. I will always have a special place in my heart for supporting the students at Fresno State!

Christopher Gabriel: I am so very sorry to hear this news. Joe – who I only called Dr. Castro on my radio program – was always so generous with his time coming on with me whenever I asked him to do so. I would see him at various events and for someone who was endlessly pulled in a myriad of directions, he always took time to talk with anyone and everyone who stopped him. He and the entire Castro family will be in my prayers.

Mike Karbassi: Thank you for your many years helping to move Fresno forward in a big way. You helped create new opportunities for a generation of students whose success is helping us build a stronger community. This is YOUR legacy.

Nancy Kobata: So sad to hear about your illness.  My thoughts and prayers are with all of you hoping you have comfort and peace in this difficult time.

Cesilia Acevedo: I feel fortunate to have met Dr. Castro when he first arrived to Fresno State as president and to have been a student during his time. His leadership was not only motivating for Central Valley students but also inspired me personally to be bold. I will always remember his warm smiles and kind helloes as he walked around campus during lunchtime. He truly cared about us students. Please know that I am keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers during this time.

Karla Orosco: Dear Joe and Family, you are in my thoughts and I am sending good vibes. I have so admired all you have achieved as an educator and leader. Sending a big hug and a Go Bears from Hanford.

Karina Rodriquez: When I was a counselor at Sunnyside, you kept your word and gave us a shoutout when we broke Fresno State’s record with the highest enrollment. Not only that, but I personally wrote to you about a student who had accidentally applied to the wrong CSU. Even without responding, you made it happen — today, that student is a junior at Fresno State. She is the first in her family, as an African American female, to pursue a career in law enforcement. That was because of you. One thing I have always carried with me from your example is the courage to be bold and to stand in the face of truth. I could go on and on, but please know that my prayers are with you and your family. Your legacy is forever in our hearts. Come on, President Castro — be bold, and fight.

Ashleigh Rocker Greene: My heart goes out to you Mary, and your entire family! Joe is a wonderful leader and I had such a great time working with you both when I was on staff at Fresno State! In 2012, my father Richard had to be put on hospice care as well, and shortly after he passed away from stage 4 cancer… so I know what it feels like to go through something like this… my hugs and my prayers are with you!!

Rogenia Cox: Joe and I attended High School together.  My prayers are with you and my the peace of God rule  in your hearts.

Emy Lopez Phillips: Sending my prayers to the Castro family during this time. I had the great fortune to work at CSU Fresno as a new associate professor when Dr. Castro was our President. He was a wonderful leader! “Well done, good and faithful servant…” Matthew 25:23

Paula Vinzant: Your kindness, spirit and mentorship was always appreciated.

Rick Whitten: Prayers for you Joe. You were a visionary who brought transformational change to Fresno State and the community. I feel blessed to have called you a friend.

Tosha Giuffrida, EdD: Dr. Castro, it was an honor and a privilege serving under you at Fresno State. You embodied servant leadership and lifted the Valley with your leadership. Thank you for always greeting me with a genuine smile and gracious heart.

Tamsen Munger and Bruce Koligian: Dear Mary and Joe, our dear friends. We send our love and all our prayers. You are such special people and our hearts go out to you. May the Lord keep you in His loving care.

Claudia Lopez: My heart goes out to your family with great hugs in support for such a hard time. Thank you President Castro for your smile and pillars of community!

Leslie Mosier: Joe my prayers are with you, Mary and your family. Thank you for the support and kindness you showed my husband and I after meeting us. It meant a lot to us as we struggled through Doug’s diagnosis. You have such a big heart and we were so very lucky you opened it up to us at a time when we felt lost and overwhelmed. Forever grateful to you.

Martin Chavez: I’m so sorry to hear this. President Castro has been a huge inspiration in my life, and his impact on the Central Valley will never be forgotten!

Annette Doucet: I ran the alumni band at Fresno State while you were there and you both were absolutely wonderful to me. You graciously accepted me into your home. Sending love and prayers for you. Thank you for being great people. God bless.

Christopher Vieira: Mary, I’m keeping you and Joe close in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Joe’s vision and dedication to student success have had a profound impact on my life — I truly would not be where I am today without his guidance and leadership. The doors he opened at Fresno State changed the course of my journey, and I know countless others feel the same. He has made a lasting difference, and I will carry his example with me in the work I continue to do. Sending peace and healing to you and your family.

Dr. JC Gonzalez: I had the privilege of working with Joe and his son Isaac. Joe was always a fair person, and always treated everyone with care and respect. I’m praying for him and his family that loves him more than anything.

Sarah Lam: Dearest Joe, Mary, and family: Dr. Castro is always endearing to me during my tenure as the AVP for International Affairs. I went to China with Dr. Castro. He visited my hometown Hong Kong with the group. I value his leadership, his compassion, his inspiration. I wish him the best. Sending prayers and loving thoughts your way.

Kevin Arias-Romero: It’s sad and difficult to hear that Dr. Castro is in hospice and I’m sorry to hear the news. I had the pleasure of meeting with him when I was walking around campus spending time before a football game and he took time to join me on my walk and we talked about how the team was doing and he asked me when I would become a student and I said one day soon so I’ll always be thankful for his words and advice. I send prayers to him and his family during this difficult time.

Chris Vitelli: Sending our love and prayers. He was a friend to many and cared deeply about our communities within the Central Valley. His heart, sincerity, and compassion will be remembered.

Pauline Sahakian: I worked with Joe during the opening years of UC Merced. His calm demeanor and level-headed personality encouraged all who worked under him to collaborate for the good of the university. I will never forget the genuine kindness he extended to me and all who worked with him and under him. This news breaks my heart.

Sally Tannenbaum: This is such sad, tragic news. Joe was a kind, thoughtful leader who was an inspiration to so many in the Central Valley. I will treasure his friendship and counsel. God bless Joe and his family.

Richard Matoian & Dr. Linda Thomas Matoian: Joe is an inspirational leader, visionary and incredibly personable. He always remembered your name and had something that he recalled to talk to you about. Our thoughts and prayers go to Joe and his entire family.

Christine Smothers: My prayers will be with your family and for you especially Joseph Castro. I remember you and your family are so friendly, loving and caring as you would enter our school with your little boy. I’m so sad to hear that you are greatly ill. May you remember to fight and to stay strong and to look to Jesus for comfort and care and salvation. He is your greatest comforter and loves you so much. Thank you for all the care you shared with us at our center. Your family was a blessing

Dana Lucka: Dear Joe and family, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. My heart is broken but I am blessed to have spent time with you both. Joe, there isn’t one single person that I could point to who has changed my life the way you did. You were on my dissertation committee (the first when at Fresno State). You were kind, patient and opened your heart…..and your contacts to me. These connections opened doors and inspired me to (as you would say) BE BOLD.

In December shortly before Christmas I hit a huge road block in my research. First, I had run out of money and needed to dig into my savings to pay for lists to run my surveys. …… and at this time ….. it was nearly moot since 2 of the 3 CSUs I was surveying refused to part with their alumni names. I sat in my office having a melt down and sent a text to Joe asking if he had any pull with these two presidents. He graciously said he would try and then over Christmas break contacted them and I finally had my names. Shortly after the first of the year I received a call from his office saying that he was willing to help fund my research with the caveat that he would have full access to my data. If it weren’t for him my entire research would have been dead in the water! After my defense, I was collecting the binders and Joe turned to me asking if he could keep it. I laughed and said what for you’ve been writing all over it and I will get you a nicely bound copy. He said he would like to keep it because there was information in there that he could use when working with alumni. I can’t tell you how proud it made me sitting in the stands during one of his many speeches hearing my statistics woven into his speech. Both he and Mary were the kindest and most genuine servant leaders that I have ever seen and it was my honor to work alongside them during that time. In my 20 years at the University I had never seen such selfless leadership…. it was all inspiring.

His challenge to be bold led me to my next career and if it wasn’t for that inspiration I don’t think I would have even gotten there. Working alongside he and Mary were my best years. Joe your courage, compassion, and leadership truly changed my life and I know that I am probably one of many. You have my unending gratitude and my heartfelt prayers. God bless you all.

Rick Wan: We are incredibly grateful to have professional paths cross with Joe. In all the time we’ve know him he is incredibly generous with his time, knowledge, and wisdom. He is respected & admired for all that he had accomplished professionally and with his family. I for one will forever remember the care, compassion, and passion that emanated from him. Joe, you are forever in the hearts of the Blandizzi Wan family.

Jill Rubalcava: Thank you for serving and leading in education. I’m praying for you and your family!

Elizabeth Lopez: Thank you, President Castro, for always believing in CSUF students. “Be bold!”  Always reminded me be who I am and proud. Praying for you and your family

Catherine Ybarra: Dr. Castro and Mary Castro gave me so many opportunities during my time as a Fresno State student. They believed in me, opened doors that I thought would never open and thanks to them, I got to learn what it means to be a leader. My thoughts and prayers go to all his family. It’s been a great blessing to have worked with them and still be connected.

Robert J Howard: Dr Castro was a whirlwind of fresh air at Fresno State, after decades of the do nothing Welty Admin. Sorry to hear about your health, stay strong.

Shirlene Major: Sending healing prayers to the Castro family.

Fred Nelson: Sending hugs and positive energy to the whole Castro family. Dr. Castro was a thoughtful and dedicated champion for the program I work in to prepare teachers for the South Valley, and was responsible for our sustained presence at the Fresno State South Valley Campus. He never said no to any request to meet with donors or to speak out enthusiastically for our Integrated Teacher Education Program. I am truly grateful for his leadership and kindness.

Dan Carrion: Dr Castro was the best University President that we had during my entire 42 years at Fresno State. No one cared more for the students than Dr. Castro. The first time I met him one to one in person was when we were both selected as Most Valuable Professors by the Athletics Marketing folks, and we threw out the first pitch at a women’s softball game. After that, he never forgot my name. We saw each other many times and he always had a cheerful greeting for me. I worked for the previous president for 20 years, met him several times, and he never remembered my name. That was the norm that I expected when I met Dr. Castro. I was so pleasantly surprised by Dr Castro’s down-to-Earth demeanor. During his time as President, so many wonderful things happened at the University. Unlike with the previous administration, I was proud to be working there again. I was so sad when he left. It was as if I was losing a friend. Godspeed Dr Castro!!!

Janice Avila: I was so fortunate to work with Joe in the City of Visalia. We worked in the effort to bring a UC Campus to Visalia.   I still have my UC Visalia sweatshirt that we proudly wore.  Joe and I were fortunate to travel to Amtrak to a UC regents meeting. I quickly became in Awe of Joe. He was one of the brightest young people I had the privilege of working with. Proud to be his ‘work mom’ during that time. Love you so. So proud of you!  Praying for peace, comfort and rest during this time.

Aaron Greene: Dr. Castro and Mary, I hold you and your family deep in my heart and prayers. Dr. Castro you took a risk and brought Project Rebound to Fresno State when most campuses did not want to. Dr. Castro you encouraged me to “Be Bold” and I was. You opened the door for me and due to that I am in the process of receiving my doctorate and both of my children are in college. I am sorry I have not made it to have lunch. We love you for everything you have done for the people of California and my family. May God bless you in this most difficult time.

Stan & Wendy Simpson: We send our love and hope to the Castro Family. We had the opportunity to meet him through our association with the Fresno State Board of Governors and The Lyles Group and appreciate all he did to connect people of Fresno State and the Community of Visalia. Bless his family and all his devotion to education of Fresno State students.

Christine Castro: My prayers with you and the family.

Emma Hughes: Dr. Castro, when President of Fresno State, approved developing a bachelor’s degree program to run in two Central California prisons. This degree program has changed, and continues to change so many lives, illustrating the power of education to build hope, resilience, a better future, as well as safer and stronger communities. Thank you, Dr. Castro, for supporting the program.

Victoria Martinez: Sending prayers!! Although things ended a little wild it was so inspiring having a valley native and a Latino in charge while I was at Fresno State! Also, you always answered our tweets about issues in the classrooms! lol. I hope the rest of your days are met with joy!! Sending love to the family!!! Go dogs!

Amy Allen: Thank you, Dr. Castro, for your courageous leadership and constant advocacy for students. I appreciate all the encouragement you gave to me over the years, especially as I chose to pursue a doctorate. Your thoughtful and kind words will be with me always. I will cherish our time and memories together.  Mary, Jess, Lauren, Isaac – you are in our prayers as you go through this time together.

Jacob Wilson: Joe, thank you for always championing the arts and encouraging us all to Be Bold. You were an exceptional leader to so many at Fresno State during your time there. You and Mary welcomed me with open arms, and as an out queer student, that meant more than I can ever express.

I’ve carried your advice to Be Bold into my life, and I’m now pursuing a career in the entertainment industry here in LA. I often reflect on the question: “If I were to possibly reach the end of my life unexpectedly, what words would I hope people used to describe me?” When I think of you, the words that come to mind are kind, strong, compassionate, bold, visionary, caring, and inspiring.

Please know you’ve made a difference in countless lives, in ways that ripple far beyond what you might ever imagine. Thank you for creating space for the arts, for the LGBTQ+ community, and for ALL during your leadership at Fresno State. I send you and your family boundless love, appreciation, and respect during this time.

Andrew Hoff: Joe Castro came to Fresno State at just the right time.  From his first days on campus, each person he encountered had his caring attention.  With loving and engaged support from Mary, they moved the university forward and created a place where all students could thrive.  You touched and enriched the lives of thousands of students and engaged in a region that richly benefitted from your leadership.  May God bless and keep you and your family.

Marc Wilson: Dear Dr. Joe Castro and family, thank you for all you have done for Fresno State and the community. Without you Fresno State would not have had the chance to be the world class university that it is today. Athletics would not have the chance to enter the PAC-12 next year as they are poised to do. Again, thank you. Prayers for you.

Judy B: My thoughts and good wishes are with you during this time. I also admire Joseph’s focus and accomplishments and share his passion to help with a hand up to those groups or individuals in many groups who can use extra care. May you find peace during this journey.

Dr. T Herr: Joe and I were at Stanford about the same time.  Had an opportunity to work with him on community projects at UC Merced.  Honored to serve on his transition team, and enrollment advisory committee at Fresno State.  Joe was the champion of the Hmong minor program.  Sending Joe and Mary nothing but the best.

Anonymous: I met Joe in 1997 when he became Director of Academic Programs during the very early days of UC Merced. I worked for Merced College then as the VP of Instruction. He treated everyone at this community college with kindness and respect.

William ‘Bill’ Parry: I was privileged to get to know Dr. and Mrs. Castro through service on the Advisory Board @ FSU. They are both pure classes. It was an honor to have Dr. Castro lead FSU. Dr. Castro and I share a love for education, our native Kings County, and Hawaiian shirts!! My heartfelt prayers are with the family.  God bless.

Cindy Smades Klein: I had the distinct honor of being my mother, Helen Smades, date for the past 25+ years at countless events-many of which were gracious invitations from Dr. Joe Castro. Dr. Castro’s approach to leadership and life will live within me as he showed us the right way to treat others. My thoughts and prayers go out to Dr. Castro and all the familia. Thank you for that kindness and what you did to support so many in their educational journeys. May Our Lord provide you and your family with comfort and peace during this time.

Benjamin Cuellar: I met Joe when he was working for the UC system in Fresno a few decades ago. We had many golf meetings and lunches together. It was no surprise to me when it was announced that he was the president of Fresno State and later chancellor of the CSU system. He was showing his leadership qualities then, and he continued to do so when he was appointed president and chancellor. He was a leader for everyone, dedicated to the common good and access to higher education for all, particularly those who had limited access to higher education. He was a great leader and individual who lifted many along his journey. I and many others will never forget him. He leaves a great legacy. Vaya con Dios, Joe.

Rosendo Pena, Jr: Dr. Castro, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. As you will recall, I was serving on the Fresno State Alumni Association Board when you were hired as the university President. Thank you for the excitement and vision you brought to the Fresno State community. Your reports to the Board to kick off our meetings were always upbeat, informative, and inspirational. Our impromptu walks and contacts in the neighborhood during your time in Fresno gave us the opportunity to share personal experiences. These one-on-one conversations helped solidify a more personal and lasting friendship that I will always cherish.

Henry Oputa: Dear Family, I love you, and I love your Patriarch, Joe — my Brother in Christ. I believe he has lived, and continues to live, a full life by the grace of God through faith (Ephesians 2:8). On life’s journey, he has climbed many mountains. He climbed with strength, with joy, and with faith—and along the way, he lifted others up. Even now, he is still lifting others, showing us that the joy of the Lord is his strength (Nehemiah 8:10). Today, I rejoice with him, and with you—his precious family. In this time of struggle and hope, may you be comforted. Do not lose heart, but hold to the trust he himself has embraced: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do, and He will show you the right way” (Proverbs 3:5–6 GNT). May God’s peace surround you, His strength uphold you, and His love carry you through each moment. Amen.

Felicia McGinty: Sending heartfelt prayers and healing wishes to Joe, my friend and UC colleague. I’m so sorry this is happening.

Jack Oberti: Dear Mary and Joe. It’s been 6 years since I retired and moved out of state, hard to believe it’s been that long since I’ve seen you and have definitely been out of the loop. I was shocked to just now learn this news about you Joe. You’re obviously loved by so many people. Prayers from us heading your way!

Michael and Silvana Giovannetti and family: Dear Dr. Castro (Joe), Mary and family: Our thoughts and humble prayers are with you during this very difficult time. We cannot thank you enough for your courageous leadership, dedication and commitment to all students and families within the Central San Joaquin Valley, California, and beyond. You have always been a most kind and thoughtful educational leader, while serving as President at Fresno State and as CSU Chancellor. Thank you also for your excellent teaching, mentorship and friendship during our JDPEL days. Your kindness and generosity gave me the support, confidence and energy I needed to complete a most rewarding chapter of my life during my later years. You were there again and again every time we reached out to you. Additionally, your belief in us started and placed the Italian Studies Interdisciplinary Minor Program on the National map of academic, linguistic and cultural excellence. “Grazie Mille, Caro Amico”. You will always be with us; in our thoughts and in our hearts. May God give you and your family comfort and peace.

Melanie Flores: Dr. Castro holds a special place in my heart and will always be there. Back in August of 2019 I was in a severe car accident along with other Bulldog Marching Band Color Guard members. I remember coming out of my surgery after breaking my neck and seeing a beautiful bouquet of flowers waiting for me. Dr. Castro had sent them over. I have never forgotten such kindness when I was in such a dark place in my life. I pray for you and your beautiful family at this time. God bless you all!

John Welty: Joe and Mary – Sharon and I have you in our thoughts and prayers. Joe you have helped thousands of students and others to dream about new possibilities in their lives. Those people will never forget your kindness and support. God Bless You!

Tania Pacheco-Werner: I had the privilege of meeting Joe when I was a graduate student at UCSF. We started the same year, he as Vice Chancellor and I as a doctoral student. He filled our campus with optimism and caring. He not only gave me the faith to finish my studies, but more importantly, he created a campus atmosphere where I felt like I belonged. He renewed my faith in systems and service and I will forever be grateful to him for that. May God bless the whole family. You are all in my prayers. Mary I’m sending you a hug.

Lynne Ashbeck: Joe and Mary: Thank you for choosing Fresno State. Simply put, we are a better community because you were here. Your personal connections, grace, openness and genuine love for everyone who crossed your path was remarkable. Wishing you and your family peace during this part of your journey. Lifting you up in prayer.

Alex Johnson: I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for all that Joseph Castro and his family have done for Fresno State. I was a student at Fresno State 2011-2016. I distinctly remember him being concerned about the wellbeing of us students and that care extended outside the classroom. I’ll always remember being given a survey on student life. Those survey results brought about the student cupboard where students were able to access food and snacks free of charge. This was done to address food insecurity on campus. This project was spearheaded by Joseph Castro and his wife Mary. He is a great man. He served others with honor and used his presidency to reach the unserved students on campus. I pray for comfort and peace. Thank you to Joseph Castro and family.

Jenni DeRuosi: Dr. Castro and Family, You are in my family’s thoughts at this difficult time. My Dad was Paul DeRuosi, who worked with Dr. Castro at Fresno State. Dad so enjoyed working with Dr. Castro. When my Dad passed away, Dr. Castro ordered the flags at the campus to be flown half-mast. That honor bestowed upon my family was deeply touching for our family and both my Mom, Tanis, and me will never forget it. Wishing you peace. Love, Jenni DeRuosi

Brad S Fischer: Dearest Joe, May each day give you the strength to share time with Mary and family. May many memories find a way to make you smile and maybe a little chuckle. Be as bold as you can! Brad & Linda

Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter of Fresno: Dr. Castro, we are thinking of you and your family during this time. May the White Cross of Sigma Chi watch over you in the days ahead.

George Takata: I always called Dr. Castro “The Dogfather,” whether it was on TV or in person (it was Dr. Castro for serious news stories, of course). We had a great relationship, and he was gracious with his time whenever we asked him for an interview. He is a true 1 of 1, a Bulldog to the core, and served Fresno State with great pride. I wish him much peace and strength to help him navigate through this extremely difficult time with Mary and his family. God Bless you, Dogfather!

Michael and Jeanne Adams: Joe: our best wishes to you and your family. Many wonderful memories. Michael and Jeanne

Candy Brice: Praying for you all during this difficult time. May you all hold on tight to each other and lift each other up and encourage each other. Dr. Castro gave me a chance and allowed me to work for him when I attended Fresno State in 1998-2000 at the UC Davis/CSUF Joint Doctoral Program. I will forever be grateful.

Davena Witcher: Thank you Joe for all the innovative and impactful work you have done for the FSU students & our Fresno community. Your kind heart has blessed us all.

Michelle Calvarese: I am keeping Dr. Castro in my prayers. May God grant him and his family comfort and strength during this time.

Msgr. Ray Dreiling: Dear Joe, may my humble prayers and immense gratitude accompany you during this time. The voice of the Lord is firm and true: “Well done good and faithful servant!” Thank you!

Mr. Ruben Elias and Dr. Nellie Neri: Sending our prayers your way to the Castro Family. May God hear our prayers! Two former Dogs.

Francisco Hernandez: I was fortunate to have met Joe when he arrived at Berkeley as a student. I realized then what people know now. He is a born leader. Dedicated. Skilled. Compassionate. I was fortunate to witness Joe’s unprecedented climb to become a national leader. To Joe I send love and admiration. For his family I send appreciation for sharing him with us.

Linda Garza: Wishing you and family peace & strength as you navigate these times. When I reflect on my time working with you, what stands out most is the incredible support and kindness you showed me. You not only brought me home you gave me a chance to invest in a community I love. You championed equity with such grace and love. Your legacy of kindness & spirit has forever impacted my life. Thank you! With deepest gratitude and warmth, Linda.

Michael Denison: My thoughts are with Joe and his family. I would love to speak with Joe, but I understand and respect the family’s desire for privacy. Joe was a client and is a friend. His professionalism, wisdom, humor, and friendship will always be with me. Sending love to Joe and his family.

Cynthia Teniente Matson: Wishing peace, tranquility and god’s goodwill & blessings during this difficult team for the entire Castro family.

Janet Booth: I’m am grateful for my years at Fresno State as Dr. Castro’s Presidential Aide. His compassion for students, campus, and staff made working for him a great opportunity and experience. Thank you, Dr. Castro. May God bless you, Mary, Jess, and the family. Be Bold!

Patricia O’Connor: I’m praying for your strength during this incredibly difficult time. Joe, Mary and family – you are amazing and I’m truly blessed by your friendship.

Treva D Lee: The Valley greatly benefited when we got the double package of both Dr. & Mrs. Castro. His home-town roots and UC connections gave him great credibility with the campus and community. I remember how engaging & gracious they both were when they met with UC Alumni that call this area home, before they had even officially started working at Fresno State. Dr. Castro’s willingness to be available certainly made for some memorable tweets with students, faculty, and the community at-large. Prayers to comfort him and his family during this difficult journey.

Matthew Macia: I came to know Dr. Castro about 12 years ago and had the opportunity to chat, debate and share some meals with him. In all our social and professional interactions, I have always found him a thoughtful, engaged and earnest person. I wish him and his family only the best.

Cathy L Cory: Love and prayers sent to Joseph Castro and his family at this sensitive time. May Creator hold this man close as he nears his journey, and provide comfort to his loved ones. Blessings for the positive influence you offered to so many of our future generations.

Manuchehr Shahrokhi: Dear Professor Castro: We are shocked and heart broken to hear the news about your health. Our love and prayers are with you. You are a great Professor, President, Chancellor, and human being.

Benjamin Wallen: Joe was a great mentor for me and added me to his leadership program at UCSF. I learned a lot from Joe and am really sad to hear this news. He will live on with all the great work he did at UCSF and other places. Thanks for everything Joe.

Jose Leon Barraza: May God bless Dr. Castro and his family in these very challenging moments. I thank Dr. Castro for his caring, vision and willingness to create opportunities for folks who were being left out of the access to higher education. Dr Castro was the first CSUF President who made time to attend events in Southeast Fresno. He was prompt to accept an invitation to be a keynote speaker at SEFCEDA’s Annual Trailblazers for Prosperity Awards Luncheon. His BOLD approach to transform CSUF had a very positive impact on helping low income residents to obtain a formal education that promoted their economic prosperity.

Dan Boyajian: Dr. Castro, while working the ramp at a Fresno state football game, you walked up and shook my hand and said ” thank you for protecting all of us tonight”. Sir it was an honor to have shook your hand that night and I could never forget that moment! You are a true inspiration to everyone! May God bless you and your family.

Anthony Damian: You and your family are in my prayers. Fresno State is in a better place because of you.

Bryan Bedrosian: Dr. Castro was a fine individual. He was the right fit to be President of Fresno State. He was an inspiration to the students at Fresno State and to the residents of the Valley. My wife Rosie and I are extremely saddened by this news. He and his family are in our prayers.

Rosa Heckenberg, Cal State LA: My prayers are for Chancellor Castro and the family, I believe in miracles and praying for your health to be restored, you are one of the strongest pillars of the CSU and we need you.

Anonymous: Receiving letters hand signed by you for earning a 4.0 meant a lot to me. It made me feel that I wasn’t just some ID number attending the university. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Dr. Larissa Mercado-Lopez: I am forever grateful for Dr. Castro’s support of my work with student parents at Fresno State. Beyond words, Dr. Castro, a proud former student parent himself, put dollars behind our efforts to create a more supportive and inclusive campus for students who are raising children. It was always inspiring to see him express his deep and unapologetic love for his own family and community—an important reminder that for many of us, love is at the center of what we do in higher education and who we are as human beings. His impact will be felt for generations to come.

Cynthia Harris: Oh Joe and Mary, my heart breaks to have followed this journey on Facebook. You both are true gems with such generous hearts. I’ve been praying for you since seeing your recent posts. Please know you’re loved by many, and have so very positively impacted so many throughout the years. It was a true blessing and privilege to work with you, Joe, at UCSF. Then I was awarded a bonus to have learned you were leaving there to come to Fresno, so I could still work with you! I will pray for you and your sweet family! Much love and hugs sent your way!

Everardo and Nora Pedraza: Thank you for your kindness, your love for family and community. Your big heart is how we remember you. As Saint Paul wrote, “There are three things that last, faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love.” Thank you for your loving service. Keeping you and yours in our hearts and prayers. Thank you!

Froylan L Ramirez: My most warm regards to family and Joe. Thank you for your leadership and the positive impact you had during your tenure at Fresno State, my Alma mater. I only wish that there had been a leader like you at the college during my four years. You left an indelible mark on my nephew Bryce Herrera, who saw you as a mentor and has followed in serving those individuals forgotten or marginalized in this city. I will keep you and family in my prayers.

Deborah and Tom Johnson: Our prayers are with Joseph and Mary at this time. He has been a fixture in this community and we truly love him for all his hard work. May God bless the family!

Markel and Theressa Quarles: We offer our love and prayers to the Castro family. We will forever be grateful for the opportunity to serve with and learn from Joe during our time at Fresno State. You embraced us warmly and supported us intentionally as we strive to increase families’ social mobility through the transformative power of education. Your impact is deeply felt and your words of wisdom continue to ring true. Much love today and always.

Eric Coleman: It was truly an honor and privilege to work with you during my time at Fresno State Athletics. You were the first university president I ever had a personal relationship with, and that has always meant so much to me. I will never forget the day you personally called me when you learned I had accepted another opportunity, you cared enough to try to convince me to stay. That moment showed me the kind of leader and person you are: genuine, supportive, and deeply invested in people. I will always carry that memory with gratitude. Sending you and your family my heartfelt thoughts and prayers.
