Sanger Unified School District has released its California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress scores showing improvements in English Language Arts and math.
In the 2024-25 school year, 53% of Sanger Unified students, roughly 6,850, met or exceeded ELA standards. This is a 4.25% increase from the 2023-24 school year.
More impressively, the scores match pre-pandemic results. In the 2018-19 school year, 53.5% of students reached standards.
In math, almost 41% of students met or exceeded standards, a 3.22% increase from the 2023-24 school year.
Comparatively, in 2018-19 about 43% of students reached standards.
The district has an enrollment of 13,250, of which 13.2% are English Language Learners.
The superintendent is Dr. Dennis Wiechmann.
Overcoming COVID Learning Losses
School districts throughout California and the nation have struggled to overcome the learning losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the The Education Recovery Scorecard, developed by researchers from Stanford University, Harvard University and Dartmouth College, 31% of California students attend districts scoring above 2019 levels in math, with 12% of students in districts scoring above 2019 levels in reading, and 10% in districts that have recovered in both.
Sanger Is First Local District to Release Scores
Thomas Soto, the district’s director of educational services, will present the data at the Tuesday night school board meeting.
Sanger Unified is the first local school district to publicly release its CAASPP scores.
Clovis Unified and Fresno Unified told GV Wire that they are waiting for the state to publicly release student scores, which occurred in early October last year.
Fresno County Superintendent of Schools and Central Unified did not respond to requests for comment.
Sanger Unified’s Plans for Future Instruction
The district plans to analyze this data with every school site, addressing content area, target groups, grades, teachers, and individual students.
Also, Sanger Unified will lead professional development for elementary and secondary school teachers, according to an agenda item.
Elementary teachers will participate in science of reading and math cognitively guided instruction. Secondary teachers will receive learning progressions and common formative assessments.
Sanger Unified also says it will create cohesive curriculum and targeted strategies for enhancing English language development.
Additionally, personnel will complete formal district walkthroughs throughout the year as Sanger Unified strives to raise student achievement.
