After more than half a year living on the streets — surviving on cat food and the kindness of strangers — a scruffy little poodle mix named Willow is finally off the sidewalks and learning what it means to be safe.
Willow, believed to be around 2 years old and weighing just 15 pounds, was first spotted wandering a Fresno neighborhood in December 2024.
For months, she traveled with another stray, but by spring, her companion had disappeared, leaving Willow to fend for herself.

“She started looking like she was struggling to even walk,” said Mell Garcia of Mell’s Mutts who had been keeping an eye on her. “After seeing her out there for over six months, we knew we had to do something.”
Neighbors said Willow had been sneaking bites of cat food left out on porches, dodging human contact and remaining ever-cautious. But now, she’s safe and slowly warming up to the idea of indoor life — especially if treats are involved.
Though still a little aloof, Willow is making progress. Rescuers say she’ll need a patient, understanding home that’s willing to give her the time she needs to rebuild trust.
