A local award-winning book designer, Carlos Mireles-Guerrero, is making his author/illustrator debut with 100 First Words for Little Gamers.
The book, part of the popular 100 First Words series, celebrates the world of gaming — everything from online game lingo to tabletop pieces. The book is publishing on Nov. 4.
“It’s not just for youth, but for them and their parents,” Mireles-Guerrero said. “Somebody who has children and wants to show their kids some of the words that they learned gaming or got introduced to as they were growing up.”
It is the perfect way for gaming parents or geeky family members to pass on the joy of play, according to Mireles-Guerrero. In turn, parents and grandparents can learn about new online games and terminology, bridging the gaps between generations and bringing people together.
“I feel that gaming is an integral part of growing up,” Mireles-Guerrero said. “Whether it be learning games in school, icebreakers for teens and adults in school and work or traditional video gaming with friends and family. Gaming is all around us and helps create everlasting bonds and memories.”
Also, he hopes that the book can show people that gaming can be fun and not something you have to be competitive in.
From Illustrator to Store Owner to Author
The Fresno-native has worked professionally as a book designer for the past five years and earned national recognition for his cover and interior layout work.
But this is his first book as an author and illustrator. Sanger-based indie imprint Familius is the publisher.
Judging by the Cover: A Bookstore, co-owned by Mireles-Guerrero and his wife and fellow author Ashley Marie Mireles-Guerrero, will host a book launch on Nov. 8.
The event includes a book signing and game-a-thon. Tickets are $10, and Judging by the Cover will donate half of each sale to the Boys & Girls Club.
Mireles-Guerrero emphasizes the ability of books to expand horizons.
“Whenever you get the chance to read, definitely take that time. It’s going to open your eyes,” Mireles-Guerrero said. “It’s always good to have perspective on things outside of your own bubble.”
Particularly, he hopes this book will engage families in the growing popularity of gaming. The digital space has evolved to connect people internationally and even become a viable career for some.

Mireles-Guerrero’s History of Work
Mireles-Guerrero has left his artistic touch throughout the city, from murals to community partnerships.
“Living in Fresno and growing up in different areas, going to different schools, and being involved in art throughout my life has allowed me to be able to achieve (publishing a book),” Mireles-Guerrero said.
He has worked with the Fresno Grizzlies, Taco Truck Throwdown, FresYes Fest, Don Tacha’s, San Joaquin Valley Bookfest, and the south Tower Community Land Trust.
His artwork has graced Fresno walls and been featured in Art Hop exhibitions and digital showcases.
Mireles-Guerrero attended Bullard Talent and Central East High School. After, he obtained a degree in Graphic Communications from Fresno City College.
“Coming from where I come from, I didn’t know that I would ever end up being an author, an illustrator or a local business owner,” Mireles-Guerrero said. “It’s good to share with the youth, here in Fresno, that it’s possible to achieve something in publishing. You can be an author.”
