Americans overwhelmingly consider adultery and human cloning to be the most morally wrong behaviors, according to Gallup’s latest Values and Beliefs poll.

A staggering 89% of U.S. adults say extramarital affairs are morally unacceptable, while 87% say the same about human cloning. Other widely condemned behaviors include polygamy (74%), suicide (71%), and pornography (58%).

At the opposite end, 90% of respondents view birth control as morally acceptable, followed by divorce (75%), and sex between unmarried adults (68%).

Opinions remain sharply divided on abortion, with 49% calling it morally acceptable, a five-point drop from 2024. Views on gender transition and animal testing are also split, often falling along party lines.

The poll reveals large partisan gaps. Democrats are far more accepting of abortion and gender identity changes, while Republicans show greater support for the death penalty and traditional values.

Gallup notes that generational differences are smaller than political ones, though younger adults tend to be more liberal on social issues.

The poll, conducted May 1–18 among 1,003 adults, carries a ±4-point margin of error.
