The Clovis Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location, authorities announced.

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on data showing a high number of DUI-related crashes and arrests, police said.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” said Corporal Mark Bradford, traffic supervisor. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Police reminded drivers that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as marijuana, can also affect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely.

A first-time DUI conviction can result in fines and penalties averaging $13,500 and a suspended license.

The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
