A 19-year-old Madera man was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of felony DUI after a crash that killed his passenger, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officers responded to the scene shortly after 9 p.m. on Road 35, south of Avenue 14.
Investigators said the teen was driving a black 2005 Nissan Altima northbound at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle.
The car veered across the southbound lane and into a dirt shoulder, where it struck a PG&E power pole and a wire fence before overturning.
A 20-year-old male passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered major injuries and was transported to Community Regional Medical Center.
He remains in CHP custody and will be booked into Madera County Jail once medically cleared.
Authorities confirmed the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash.
