A grass fire that broke out near the San Joaquin River bottom west of Woodward Park in prompted temporary evacuations Thursday afternoon before crews brought the flames under control, Fresno officials said.
The Fresno Fire Department responded to the blaze around 11:40 a.m., with assistance from Fresno police.
Firefighters estimated the fire burned about 5 acres before it was fully contained just before 1 p.m.
As a precaution, the Fire Department asked for evacuations of homes near the bluff area.
The evacuation order has since been lifted, officials said.
51 Firefighters Suppress Blaze
A total of 51 fire personnel were assigned to the incident.
Crews are expected to remain on scene for another one to two hours during the mop-up phase.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
