A fast-moving wildfire in San Luis Obispo County has burned 35,530 acres along Highway 166 near New Cuyama and remains only 5% contained, CalFire reported Thursday morning.
The Madre Fire was first reported Wednesday and is being managed under unified command by Los Padres National Forest, CalFire San Luis Obispo, and the Bureau of Land Management.
The cause of the Madre Fire is under investigation.
Evacuation orders have been issued for the following zones: SLC-337, SLC-226, SLC-338, SLC-264, SLC-299, SLC-265, SLC-312, and LPF-017.
Additional evacuation warnings are in effect for nearby areas, including zones SLC-358, SLC-313, SLC-300, SLC-339, SLC-298, SLC-264, and SLC-263.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, current weather, terrain, and fuel conditions have caused the fire to grow exponentially in less than 24 hours, spreading across multiple counties near San Luis Obispo County and producing widespread smoke impacts.
Approximately 50 structures are threatened, but no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
The firefighting effort includes 39 engines, four helicopters, four water tenders, and two hand crews, with more than 300 personnel assigned to the incident.
Air tankers from across the state are conducting fire suppression missions as conditions allow, CalFire reported.
