Kings County Sheriff Dave Robinson announced Tuesday that he will retire on Nov. 24, ending a nearly 30-year career in public service.

Robinson made the announcement during a Board of Supervisors meeting, where he informed county leaders of his decision. His announcement provides supervisors time to consider their options for selecting a replacement.

Those options include appointing someone to serve the remainder of Robinson’s term, which ends in January 2029, or holding a special or concurrent election.

Robinson, the county’s 15th sheriff, took office in 2011 after beginning his county service in 1995. He cited recent changes in state law extending his current term and health concerns as factors in his decision.

“I have decided it’s time to ride off into the sunset and turn the reins over,” Robinson said, adding he plans to support the board in the transition process.

He praised the work of the Sheriff’s Office and its 350 employees, saying they have “a special place in my heart.”
