Protesters are expected to gather at multiple sites across Fresno on Saturday as part of “No Kings Day,” a international movement organized in response to what participants describe as authoritarianism and ego-driven politics.

What Is ‘No Kings Day’?

“No Kings Day” is a international protest organized by the 50501 Movement, a group that describes itself as a coalition of everyday Americans advocating for democracy and opposing what it characterizes as authoritarian actions by President Donald Trump. The name “50501” stands for 50 states, 50 protests, one movement.

The demonstrations are set for Saturday, aligning with Flag Day and Trump’s 79th birthday. The date also marks a military parade in Washington, D.C., commemorating the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary — an event organizers point to as a central reason for the protests.

Earlier this year, protesters affiliated with the movement criticized Trump and former government adviser Elon Musk for large financial cuts to federal departments and the mass layoffs of federal employees.

The movement follows recent immigration protests in Los Angeles that drew a military response and national attention.

Organizers said participants should follow the law, remain nonviolent, and work to de-escalate potential confrontations.

The Fresno Police Department said that it has a plan in place with extra resources to ensure the safety of the protesters, attendees, and the surrounding community.

Councilmember Nick Richardson, who represents the district where the Blackstone and Nees demonstration is expected to take place, said, “I don’t need to agree or disagree with anyone who wants to peacefully assemble and exercise their constitutional rights.”

Richardson said, “But I am bound to make sure it stays safe, peaceful, and that our expression of free speech doesn’t put any of my constituents or their livelihoods into danger. I encourage public expression, and public discourse, and will always stand for that, regardless of the cause.”
