A traffic shift is scheduled to take place Thursday on Riggin Avenue in Visalia as part of a widening project, the city said in a statement.

Construction crews are working on Phase 2, focusing on the southside of the roadway. Paving is expected to wrap up this week, allowing the southside to begin carrying eastbound traffic.

Westbound traffic will be shifted to the northside of the road and temporarily managed in a single lane as final paving work is completed.

“Traffic lane shifts will be posted on the roadway with crews directing traffic as necessary,” said Diego Corvera, senior civil engineer and project manager for the City of Visalia. “Detour routes will be posted to properly advise the public as needed and we ask that travelers be extra aware when traversing the construction areas and slow for the cone zone.”

The traffic switch will establish the roadway’s final configuration, with eastbound lanes on the southside and westbound lanes on the northside. Striping and signage are still to come, but the frontage road will remain operational throughout the remainder of the project.

The Riggin widening aims to expand the roadway to a four-lane divided street between Mooney Boulevard and Conyer Street. Improvements include new bike lanes, sidewalks, a frontage road, drainage upgrades, center medians, streetlights, and landscaping. Construction is scheduled for completion in July.

Updates are available at www.visalia.city/rigginmooney and on the city’s social media platforms.
