A pedestrian died Wednesday night after being struck by a marked patrol vehicle driven by an on-duty Visalia police officer, authorities said.

The collision occurred around 9:10 p.m. near the intersection of Houston Avenue and Rinaldi Street, according to the Visalia Police Department.

Emergency medical crews responded and transported the pedestrian to Kaweah Health Medical Center. Despite life-saving efforts, the individual was died at the hospital.

In an effort to ensure transparency, the Visalia Police Department has requested the California Highway Patrol take over the investigation into the fatal crash.

The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed.
