Two 16-year-olds appeared in juvenile court Wednesday as Fresno County prosecutors began the legal process to try them as adults in the fatal shooting of Caleb Quick in Clovis.

The suspects, a boy and a girl, are being held separately in juvenile custody. They appeared before Judge Amythest Freeman separately at the Juvenile Courthouse in Department 99A.

The courtroom was closed to media recordings, including photos, video, and audio, following a court order.

The female suspect appeared first. Her detention hearing was continued, with her next court dates set for June 18 and June 23 in Department 99B.

She is accused of driving the getaway car and is charged with murder. This charge is enhanced for being a co-participant armed with a firearm.

The male suspect’s case was also continued, with new hearing dates scheduled for June 4 and June 9 in Department 99B.

Authorities said the male suspect, believed to be the shooter, is charged with murder, along with enhancements for personally and intentionally discharging a firearm causing death and committing the crime by lying in wait.

There is a possibility, due to scheduling, that the suspects’ individual cases may be heard in downtown Fresno.

Fresno County DA Files Motion to Reassign Teens to Adult Court

Judge Freeman read the motion filed by the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office requesting a transfer hearing to try both teens as adults in each of their hearings. Prosecutors said the process would be lengthy and could take months before the court schedules a court date to decide whether the suspects will face adult charges.

If the case is transferred to adult court and results in convictions, the male suspect could face life without parole, prosecutors said. The female could face a sentence of 26 years to life. If the case remains in juvenile court, the maximum penalty would be confinement up to age 25, or up to seven years.

Both defense attorneys raised concerns about media access, particularly regarding the release of the suspects’ names. Judge Freeman noted that their names are now considered public record, though GV Wire has opt not to publish them at this time.

Both teens will remain in custody unless the court rules otherwise. The juvenile court does not have a bail process, prosecutors told the press.

Timeline of April 23 Murder

The Clovis Police Department described the April 23 homicide as targeted and planned.

Police responded to reports of gunfire near Willow and Nees avenues at 8:57 p.m. that night.

Officers found Quick with a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.

Investigators said the suspects arrived in a 2024 white Tesla Model 3 at a McDonald’s around 7:44 p.m. and left the lot at 8:12 p.m. Quick arrived at 8:22 p.m., followed by the male shooting suspect, who crossed the street toward the restaurant around 8:33 p.m.

The Tesla returned to the parking lot moments later and parked several rows away. Surveillance video showed the shooting suspect entering the McDonald’s at 8:38 p.m., sitting briefly and then following Quick outside.

Police said the shooting occurred at 8:56 p.m. as Quick approached his car. The shooting suspect fled west toward Fresno, and was picked up by the Tesla about a minute later. A handgun was recovered during a search warrant, Fleming said.

Surveillance footage confirmed the suspects left the scene before officers arrived.

Clovis police announced the arrests Friday, May 9. At a news conference the following day, Chief Curt Fleming said both teens are students in the Clovis Unified School District and knew the victim. Due to their ages, officials have released limited information.
