The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday it will seek to have two 16-year-olds charged in the killing of Caleb Quick prosecuted as adults.

The male minor, who police say was the shooter, is charged with murder, along with enhancements for personally and intentionally discharging a firearm causing death and committing the murder by lying in wait, prosecutors said.

The female minor, who is accused of driving the getaway car, is also charged with murder, with an enhancement for being a co-participant armed with a firearm.

Clovis police announced the arrests Friday, identifying the suspects as a 16-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl. At a Saturday news conference, Police Chief Curt Fleming said both teens, who are students in the Clovis Unified School District, knew Quick.

Fleming said limited information could be released due to the suspects’ ages.

DA’s Office Said Juveniles Could Face Life if Charged as Adults

The DA’s office said that if the minors are convicted in adult court, the male suspect faces life without the possibility of parole, while the female could face 26 years to life. If the case remains in juvenile court, both face potential confinement of up to seven years or until age 25.

Under California law, minors 16 and older are no longer automatically tried as adults. The DA’s office said it will request transfer hearings for both teens. The timeline for that hearing is unknown at this time.

Prosecutors said that the detention hearings for both minors are scheduled for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Juvenile Division of the Fresno County Superior Court.

Authorities are withholding the suspects’ names unless the case is transferred to adult court.

Timeline of April 23 Murder

The Clovis Police Department described the April 23 homicide as targeted and planned.

Police responded to reports of gunfire near Willow and Nees avenues at 8:57 p.m. that night.

Officers found Quick with a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.

Investigators said the suspects arrived in a 2024 white Tesla Model 3 at a McDonald’s around 7:44 p.m. and left the lot at 8:12 p.m. Quick arrived at 8:22 p.m., followed by the male shooting suspect, who crossed the street toward the restaurant around 8:33 p.m.

The Tesla returned to the parking lot moments later and parked several rows away. Surveillance video showed the shooting suspect entering the McDonald’s at 8:38 p.m., sitting briefly and then following Quick outside.

Police said the shooting occurred at 8:56 p.m. as Quick approached his car. The shooting suspect fled west toward Fresno, and was picked up by the Tesla about a minute later. A handgun was recovered during a search warrant, Fleming said.

Surveillance footage confirmed the suspects left the scene before officers arrived.
