The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges against a 31-year-old Fresno man, accusing him of attempted murder and other crimes stemming from a violent domestic dispute on Wednesday, May 7.

Martin Campos, Jr. is accused of chasing his ex-girlfriend and her 3-year-old daughter southbound on Highway 41, during which he allegedly physically assaulted the woman and rammed his vehicle into hers, the district attorney’s office said in a statement.

The defendant reportedly threatened to kill her while pointing a firearm at her.

The situation escalated as Campos fired at least one round at the victim when the vehicles stopped at a traffic light near Jensen Avenue and Highway 99, where an officer arrived and returned fire.

Following the shooting, Campos fled, striking two nearby vehicles in a hit-and-run before surrendering to police. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Officials said Campos has been charged with 11 counts, including attempted murder, assault with a firearm, child abuse, and multiple hit-and-run offenses.

The felony complaint also includes enhancements for firearm use, possession of a firearm by a felon, and other related charges.

If convicted on all counts, Campos faces up to 35 years, 8 months in prison, plus a life sentence with the possibility of parole, prosecutors said.

Campos remains in custody, with bail set at $1,785,600. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday in Fresno County Superior Court.

The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office urges anyone experiencing domestic violence to seek help immediately.

Support is available through the Marjaree Mason Center, which offers emergency shelter, legal advocacy, and counseling. The center’s 24/7 crisis hotline can be reached at (559) 233-HELP (4357).
