A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition after an accidental shooting at a Hanford home, police said.

Officers responded around 6:08 a.m. Saturday to reports of a child shot near Emma Lee Lane and Mulberry Drive, the Hanford Police Department said.

When they arrived, they found the girl with a gunshot wound to her abdomen.

Emergency personnel provided aid, and she was transported to a local hospital before being transferred to Valley Children’s Hospital due to her worsening condition, police said.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the home, where they found the child’s mother, four other children ages 6 to 10, and a 20-year-old relative, police said.

Investigators determined the children had gotten up early and found an unsecured firearm in the kitchen. While handling the gun, one of the children accidentally shot the 3-year-old, according to police.

Authorities said that after the shooting, Alexi Contreras, 29, entered the room, took the firearm and fled the residence.

On Monday, Hanford police arrested Contreras, who was booked into Kings County Jail on suspicion of criminal storage of a firearm, destruction of evidence, being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, and felony child endangerment.
