A Fresno man was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years to life in state prison for a deadly 2020 DUI pursuit that killed another driver, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Roger Lynn Harris, 38, received five years plus 30 years to life after pleading guilty last month to charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, evading police causing death, assault with a deadly weapon, DUI drugs, hit-and-run, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors said the case stems from an April 23, 2020, incident when Harris was pulled over near Fresno Street and Olive Avenue for running a stop sign.

Officers spotted a handgun in his car, but Harris fled at high speed, running red lights and driving into oncoming traffic, prosecutors said.

Near East Olive and North Rowell avenues, Harris crashed head-on into a pickup, killing Guy Shearer, 48, of Fresno.

Police determined Harris was under the influence of marijuana, and a loaded semiautomatic firearm was found in his car.

Harris, who had two prior robbery convictions, was sentenced under California’s Three Strikes Law.
