Fresno police have arrested a man linked to a shooting last month that triggered a ShotSpotter alert and left several people fleeing for safety, the Fresno Police Department reported.

On April 22, officers responded around 3:45 p.m. to a nine-round ShotSpotter activation at Channing Way and Michigan Avenue, where they found several 9mm shell casings at the intersection.

Witnesses and surveillance video showed a vehicle speeding away from the scene, police said.

Skywatch, the police aerial unit, spotted a matching vehicle and guided officers to a residence where several people exited the car and went inside.

Police said the individuals inside cooperated and were determined to be victims of the shooting. Additional surveillance footage captured the suspect vehicle.

The following day, a police motor unit stopped Steven Gonzales for driving a car with registration that had been expired for three years. Officers cited Gonzales and impounded his vehicle.

Detectives later used body-worn camera footage and the impounded car to identify Gonzales as the suspect in the shooting. Gonzales is on active probation for robbery, authorities said.

Detectives arrested Gonzales on Thursday.

He was booked into Fresno County Jail on multiple charges, including three counts of assault with a firearm, two counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling, and several weapons violations.
