A 24-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday evening in what police say was a gang-related shooting in south Fresno, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.

Shortly after 5 p.m., officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating multiple rounds fired near Vine and Bardell avenues.

While en route, officers were notified of a gunshot victim nearby.

Officers arrived to find Taylor Washington suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where he died.

According to Fresno police, Washington was shot near Bardell Avenue. He then ran before collapsing in a nearby backyard. Several shell casings were recovered at the scene, and multiple vehicles were struck by gunfire.

Two individuals on probation were detained for questioning after being found in the area. One attempted to flee from officers. No arrests have been made, and the suspect remains unknown.

Homicide detectives believe the shooting was gang-related. Surveillance footage is being reviewed, and the investigation is ongoing in partnership with the gang enforcement unit.

This is Fresno’s fifth homicide of the year and the third linked to gang violence, authorities said. At this time last year, the city had recorded eight homicides, all gang-related.
