The Fresno Police Department will conduct DUI patrols on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. in an effort to identify drivers suspected of driving under the influence, the department said in a statement.

The department reminds the public that impaired driving can result not only from alcohol, but also from prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs that may impair driving ability.

Officers urge drivers to follow the directions for use and pay attention to warning labels about driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, in addition to a suspended license, police said.

This program is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, with funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
