In an unconventional move, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has initiated a distinctive outreach program to connect with business leaders, particularly those in the tech industry.

The governor’s office is distributing prepaid phones, commonly known as “burners,” to CEOs as part of this effort, Politico reports.

A representative from Newsom’s office said that the idea originated with the governor and has resulted in some “valuable interactions.” This approach has raised eyebrows among some observers, given Newsom’s reputation as an avid texter who already has direct lines of communication with many business leaders.

The initiative aims to reinforce California’s competitive edge in the business world. Newsom, often viewed as more business-friendly than the state Legislature, has long been seen as a mediator between private sector interests and government policies.

“If you ever need anything, I’m a phone call away,” read one note from Newsom to a prominent tech firm’s CEO printed on official letterhead, along with a hand-scrawled addendum urging the executive to reach out, Politico detailed.

No Taxpayer Funds Used

Funding for this outreach is from the California Protocol Foundation, a group that receives contributions from businesses and nonprofits to cover gubernatorial expenses. This arrangement ensures that taxpayers are not footing the bill for these communication devices.

Interestingly, the foundation also utilized leftover funds from Newsom’s inauguration account, which itself received business contributions. This circular flow of funding essentially means that California’s private sector is indirectly supporting a program designed to strengthen ties with the private sector.
