A 24-year-old man was arrested after leading authorities on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash on Highway 99, officials said.

The driver, behind the wheel of a 1990 Honda Accord, attempted to evade law enforcement just before midnight on Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Fresno Police Department helicopter tracked the vehicle as it sped northbound into Madera County.

CHP officers attempted a traffic stop near Cleveland Avenue, but the driver refused to yield, reaching speeds over 100 mph with no headlights on, authorities said.

Due to safety concerns, officers stopped the chase on the ground, relying instead on the helicopter’s surveillance.

The chase ended near Avenue 24 ½ when the driver lost control and crashed into the center median guardrail.

He suffered minor head injuries after hitting the windshield, as he was not wearing a seatbelt, officials said.

The suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Madera County Jail on felony evading charges and an outstanding warrant.
