The Fresno Police Department will conduct DUI patrols from 4 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday, police said in a news release.

Officers will be on the lookout for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The department urges drivers to be aware that impairment can result from not only alcohol but also prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Marijuana, while legal for medicinal and recreational use, is also illegal when driving under the influence, authorities said.

First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

The program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
