The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the distribution of fraudulent letters falsely claiming to be official warnings about fines for shooting guns on New Year’s Eve, they said in a statement Monday morning.

Residents in the Madera Ranchos community reported receiving the letters, which feature the Madera Sheriff’s logo and “Signed: Sheriff Tyson Pogue.”

However, Sheriff Tyson Pogue confirmed neither he nor the department issued the letters or authorized anyone to act on their behalf.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the source of the letters to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (559) 675-7770.
