The first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated “Superman” film premiered all over the internet on Thursday, Dec. 19.

According to director and DC Studios co-chairman/co-CEO James Gunn on X: “With over 250 million views and a million social posts, Superman is officially the most viewed and the most talked about trailer in the history of both DC and Warner Bros.”

It’s in the Top 5 list of most watched trailers of all time in a 24-hour period. No. 1 is “Deadpool and Wolverine” with 365 million views.

James Gunn Helms New Superman Film

Gunn (filmmaker of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy) helms the film from his own screenplay. No official synopsis has been released but DC Studios describes it as “a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”

Taking over the reign as the “Man of Steel” and Clark Kent is David Corenswet (ā€œTwisters,ā€ ā€œHollywoodā€). Rounding out the principal cast is Rachel Brosnahan (the love interest Lois Lane) and Nicholas Hoult (the famous villain Lex Luthor).

Trailer Reveals New Characters and Fan Reactions

The trailer reveals the first ever live action depiction of Superman’s dog Krypto. Appearing are other characters from the DC canon like Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillon), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and The Engineer (MarĆa Gabriela de FarĆa).

It was met with divisiveness amongst fans. The ones who appreciated it felt like it captured the pure essence of the original comic and films. Others voiced displeasure over their devotion towards Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the character in previous installments.

DC Studios’ New Direction Under Gunn and Safran

In 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery hired Gunn along with producing partner Peter Safran (co-chairmen/co-CEO of DC Studios) to oversee every film and television series under the upcoming DC Universe (DCU).

This new franchise is a reboot from the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) that was overseen by director/producer Zack Snyder (“Man of Steel” and “Justice League”) and the management of Geoff Johns, Jon Berg, and Walter Hamada. The DCEU produced titles like “Wonder Woman,” “Aquaman,” and “The Flash.”

The disappointing box office results and unsatisfied responses from fans lead to the change of power.

The first official title was “Superman: Legacy” but the subtitle was dropped by the end of Feb. 2024. The film will be the first entry into the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters and is inspired by the ā€œAll Star Supermanā€ comic book series.

ā€œSupermanā€ is set to be released to theaters and IMAX nationwide on Friday, July 11, 2025.
