Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday appointed Nathan Barankin as his new Chief of Staff, tapping a veteran government leader with extensive experience in California and national politics.

Barankin, 52, earned a Juris Doctor degree from McGeorge School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Davis. He also led the consulting firm Oak Tree Strategies from 2020 to 2024.

He has served as Newsom’s Senior Advisor since 2024 and will step into the role following the departure of Dana Williamson, who spent nearly two years in the position.

“As I step into this role at a time of both challenge and opportunity, I am deeply humbled by the Governor’s appointment,” said Barankin. “As Chief of Staff, my focus will be on serving the people of California by advancing the Governor’s bold agenda to create jobs, ensure safe neighborhoods, and improve the health and well-being of every family in our state.”

Barankin brings decades of public service experience, including nearly nine years working with Vice President Kamala Harris.

He served as her Chief of Staff during her time as U.S. Senator and California Attorney General, where he also held the role of Chief Deputy Attorney General.

He was a key figure in advancing reforms in health care, criminal justice, and immigration and in holding Wall Street accountable after the mortgage crisis, the governor’s office said.

In addition to his work with Harris, Barankin has held senior roles in California government, including as Communications Director for former Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and in the Attorney General’s Office under Bill Lockyer and Jerry Brown.

The Chief of Staff position does not require Senate confirmation. Barankin’s salary will be $235,344.
