Two-year Fresno State starting quarterback Mikey Keene announced on social media Tuesday morning that he will enter the transfer portal.
Keene, who has thrown for more than 8,000 yards at Fresno State and UCF, would have one year of eligibility remaining.
Keene’s announcement wasn’t unexpected because of the uncertainty clouding Fresno State’s program. The university’s athletic leadership has yet to announce the fate of interim coach Tim Skipper. Skipper took over shortly before the season’s start when Jeff Tedford announced his retirement due to health issues.
This past season, Keene threw for 2,892 yards and 18 touchdowns and completed a career-high 70.5% of his passes. However, he also threw 11 interceptions as he often scrambled behind a make-shift, injury-riddled offensive line that contributed to the Bulldogs’ disappointing 6-6 regular season.
“To my teammates, it’s been a great ride and I wouldn’t have wanted to do it with anyone else,” Keene wrote on X. “I will always have love for every one of you guys! With that being said I will be entering my name into the Transfer Portal with one year of eligibility left.”

Other Bulldogs Listed in Transfer Portal
College Football Network lists two other Fresno State players in the transfer portal: junior defensive lineman Gavriel Lightfoot and junior linebacker Phoenix Jackson. Both were key contributors to a Fresno State defense that carried the team for much of the season.
Jackson had 48 tackles, four sacks, 6.5 tackles for losses, two interceptions, and a forced fumble in 11 games. Lightfoot had 37 tackles and 1.5 tackles for losses.
NCAA Portal Rules
NCAA rules allow players to withdraw from the transfer portal.
Following the 2021 season, star Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener said he was entering the transfer portal to return to Washington, the program that originally recruited him. He returned to the Bulldogs instead.
