A student from Central Unified’s El Capitan Middle School was arrested Monday after admitting to making a social media threat targeting Fresno Unified’s Ahwahnee Middle School, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.

The investigation began Sunday when officers responded to reports of a threat posted on Instagram.

Detectives determined the account belonged to an El Capitan student.

On Monday, detectives contacted the student at school. The student admitted to creating the post, claiming it was intended as a “prank,” authorities said.

The student was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats, a violation of California Penal Code 422, and was booked into the Juvenile Justice Center, police said.

Fresno PD urges residents to report local threats seen on social media by calling (559) 621-7000.
